Unrest captures the raw energy of a stormy day at Mount Maunganui, where shifting light and turbulent movement transform the ocean into something powerful and painterly. Created using an intentional camera movement technique, the image blurs motion and form, allowing the sea’s intensity to take centre stage. Deep, moody tones and layered textures evoke the restlessness of the water, creating a sense of drama and emotion that feels both immersive and elemental.
More than a photograph, Unrest reads like a painting — a study of movement, atmosphere, and the natural force of the ocean. It brings depth and intensity to a space, making it a striking statement piece for contemporary interiors.
About the photographer
Jay Drew is a Mount Maunganui–based photographer who sees the world a little differently. Influenced by travel and a genuine love of discovery, Jay is drawn to the quiet details others might pass by—textures, shapes, objects, and the way light lands and moves through a scene.
With an artist’s eye, Jay finds the abstract in the ordinary, creating images that feel more like paintings than photographs—layered, considered, and atmospheric. Whether capturing landscapes or small everyday moments, her work celebrates composition, mood, and the beauty hiding in plain sight.
