More commonly seen in Te Ika-a-Māui (the North Island) than the South, the Kōtare favours open water and countryside, perching on elevated vantage points to hunt and fish. Often living in pairs, their distinctive silhouette can be spotted on power poles, fence posts and washing lines across Aotearoa, a familiar flash of colour in both rural and coastal landscapes.
