Brenda Clews is a New Zealand contemporary artist whose evocative abstract landscapes explore the connection between place, memory and emotion.

Inspired by the natural environment and the moments that linger long after an experience, Brenda approaches painting as an intuitive process. Rather than seeking to recreate a landscape exactly as it appears, she captures its atmosphere through expressive mark-making, layered colour and texture.

Her paintings move between stillness and energy, balancing quiet, contemplative spaces with a sense of movement and spontaneity. Each work develops organically, allowing the interplay of colour, gesture and form to reveal something of the landscape and the emotions it evokes.

Through her work, Brenda invites viewers to connect with their own memories of place, finding familiarity and personal meaning within the abstract.

Brenda's wider story adds another dimension to the biography: her early love of drawing, years travelling with a sketchbook, and the way painting became a meditative practice. These details help distinguish her biography from her artist statement.

Artist Statement:
I paint the places that stay with me.

My work begins with a feeling - a particular light, a colour in the landscape, the quiet of a place, or a moment that I don’t want to forget. I’m less interested in reproducing what I see than in translating what I experience.

I work intuitively, building colour, texture and gesture until the painting begins to hold its own atmosphere. There is often a tension between stillness and movement in my work; the calm of the landscape alongside the energy of memory and emotion.

Painting allows me to slow down and pay attention. It is my way of making sense of a place, and of turning something fleeting into something that can be felt again.
