Gisborne-based artist Alexandra Weston is a self-described joy-seeking colourist, creating buoyant, highly detailed works inspired by her constant search for delight in the mundane and everyday.
Colour, curiosity and an extraordinary attention to detail sit at the heart of Alexandra’s practice. Her works are generous in both process and time, building layers of colour, pattern and intricate mark-making that invite a closer look.
For her Pöttyök, Squareconfetti, Common Thread and Networked series, Alexandra paints on the reverse side of Perspex, so the finished work is viewed through the acrylic surface. It’s a technique she has explored and refined since 2009, creating a distinctive sense of depth, luminosity and clarity. She also works directly onto Perspex for her landscapes and more textural pieces.
After working in the design and styling industry while living in Hong Kong, Alexandra became a full-time artist in 2017. She has since exhibited in solo and group shows across Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland, with her work now held by collectors throughout New Zealand and around the world.
