Auckland-based artist Judith Milner captures the charm and nostalgia of everyday New Zealand life through her beautifully detailed oil paintings.
From familiar corner dairies and vintage caravans to historic architecture and sun-soaked coastal scenes, Judith's work celebrates the places, memories and moments that feel distinctly Kiwi. Her paintings are rich in character and storytelling, inviting viewers to reconnect with their own experiences while discovering the quieter narratives within each scene.
Combining traditional painting techniques with a contemporary perspective, Judith brings a fresh appreciation to the familiar, capturing not just the physical details of a place, but the feeling of being there.
An award-winning artist whose work is held in collections throughout New Zealand and internationally, Judith's original paintings and limited edition fine art prints offer a wonderful sense of place, memory and connection.
Personal Statement:
I am a representational oil painter based in Auckland. My work engages with notions of nostalgia, depicting familiar New Zealand scenes in a fresh and intimate way. I am drawn to imagery that not only reminds me of my childhood, but hints at a broader narrative beyond the frame.
New Zealand architecture is a frequent muse: using traditional techniques, I render the details and proportions of our historic buildings with precision, paying homage to their craftsmanship. While this classes my work as realist, it is the place's feeling that I seek to capture.
Despite loving art since childhood and studying it throughout high school, I was a lawyer for 13 years before turning to a career in Art. I see my paintings as a fusion of my analytical and intuitive sides.
My work is held in collections throughout New Zealand and overseas. I have been a finalist in several national art awards and in 2021 was the recipient of the Michael Evans Figurative Award at the Walker & Hall Art Awards and People’s Choice Award winner in 2023.
