Janna van Hasselt’s extruded porcelain is stretched, folded, looped and layered, creating a loose network of forms that weave over and under one another before extending out from the wall. Vivid stripes of turquoise, orange, yellow, red, green, pink and deep blue emphasise each individual strand, giving the work an energetic, almost drawn quality.

Inspired by the everyday rhythms of family life — unraveling braids, precarious piles, collapsing play structures and the constant act of balancing — Curtsy embraces irregularity and spontaneity. There is a wonderful sense of gesture to the work; forms bend, dip and overlap as though caught mid-movement.

A neon-toned backing creates a subtle glowing halo against the wall, adding another layer of colour and allowing the work to shift between ceramic object, sculpture and painting.
