Half in the Dreaming sits beautifully between landscape and abstraction, capturing the hazy space where memory, emotion and place begin to merge. Soft washes of muted earth, blush and violet are layered with expressive marks and glimpses of suggested landforms, creating a landscape that feels familiar yet just beyond reach.

There is a quiet, dreamlike quality to the work — as though caught between remembering a place and imagining it. Reflective and atmospheric, Half in the Dreaming speaks to Shona Mackenzie’s deep connection with the natural world and the fragments of landscape we carry with us.

About Shona's Work

My work is heavily influenced by the beauty of our fragile world and my deep rooted connection to the land. As a visual hoarder I am forever noticing and squirrelling away, those special moments found when you are completely present out in nature. This has been a lifelong occupation and obsession.

Always working in a series, I begin with energetic and expressive marks allowing my chosen media to do their thing. Subsequent layers of acrylic and mixed media develop in response to those first marks. A (mostly) quiet conversation with the canvas ensues and is informed by observation, memory and emotion. Eventually comes the point where through analysis I seek to balance these abstract layers with suggested landforms and interpret the stories that are making themselves heard.
