Maze sits between painting and sculpture, transforming porcelain into an intricate wall-based network of line, pattern and movement.

Janna van Hassel’s extruded porcelain is stretched, bent and interconnected into a delicate fretwork of irregular forms. Against the simplicity of white porcelain, expressive black detailing traces and interrupts each strand, giving the work an almost drawn quality — like gestural marks lifted from the page and given three-dimensional form.

Inspired by the everyday rhythms of family life — unraveling braids, precarious piles, collapsing structures and the constant negotiation of order and disorder — Maze embraces imperfection and asymmetry. Its pathways intersect, double back and lead the eye through the work, creating a composition that feels spontaneous yet carefully balanced.

A vivid neon backing casts a soft pink glow onto the wall behind, adding an unexpected pulse of colour and reinforcing Janna’s playful challenge to traditional expectations of ceramic form.
