Shroud sits boldly between painting and sculpture, transforming porcelain into a vibrant, wall-based tangle of colour, movement and form.

Janna van Hasselt’s extruded porcelain is stretched, twisted, looped and layered into a dense, haphazard network that appears to tumble from the wall. Pooling glazes in vivid orange, turquoise, red, lime, violet and deep blue flow across the surface, at times defining each individual strand and at others allowing the forms to visually merge.

Inspired by the everyday rhythms of family life — precarious piles, unraveling braids, collapsing structures and the constant act of balancing — Shroud embraces disorder rather than symmetry. Its tangled composition feels simultaneously chaotic and carefully resolved, capturing the playful tension that runs throughout Janna’s practice.

A neon-toned backing casts a subtle glow onto the wall behind, extending the work beyond the ceramic itself and reinforcing its place somewhere between object, sculpture and painting.
