Veil sits somewhere between painting and sculpture — a vibrant porcelain work that takes ceramics away from the traditional plinth and onto the wall.

Janna van Hasselt’s practice challenges expectations of clay through a playful, intuitive approach to making. Porcelain is extruded, stretched, woven and layered into delicate networks that intersect and overlap, creating a sense of movement and beautiful disorder.

Her inspiration comes from the everyday rhythms of family life — precarious piles of laundry, collapsing play huts, unravelled braids, over-frosted cupcakes and the constant balancing act of parenthood. In Veil, these familiar moments are transformed into something energetic and unexpected.

Strident, pooling glazes move across the porcelain in flashes of colour, while a vivid neon backing casts a subtle glowing halo onto the wall behind. The result is a work that feels both delicate and unruly — intricate, joyful and constantly shifting depending on the light and angle from which it is viewed.
